WordPress 1.0.2 Tutorial and Installation How To

This tutorial describes how to use the WordPress blog software with your FavorHosting.com web hosting account. FavorHosting.com specializes in hosting WordPress blogs and this tutorial is meant to help you quickly setup your forum with our web hosting service.

WordPress is currently licensed under the General Public License. This means that you can use and distribute the software as you would like as long as you don't change it.

For the sake of this tutorial we'll assume that you own the domain 'johnsmith.com' and are setting up WordPress at http://johnsmith.com/wordpress/.

Follow these steps to complete the tutorial:

  1. The first thing to do is to run through the MySQL tutorial and create a database for WordPress to use to store the information it needs.

Create a database called 'wordpress' with a user named 'wordpress'. When you do this the control panel will prefix the database and user names with some text resembling your domain name.

With our example domain of 'johnsmith.com' the database name is 'johnsmit_wordpress' and the username is the same 'johnsmit_wordpress'.
  2. Download the latest version of WordPress from the WordPress website and unzip the contents of the zip file to your desktop using http://winzip.com.

You should now have a folder which contains all the files and folders you need to install and run WordPress. Rename the 'wordpress-1.0.2' folder to 'wordpress'. Upload the 'wordpress' folder to your web hosting account. You should do this using an FTP Program. If you need help with FTPing files, you can check out the FTP tutorials on our tutorials page.

  3. Now we're going to access the WordPress 'install-config.php' file so we can setup our database information before we run the install wizard. First, we have to use the CHMOD command in your FTP program to change the permissions on the 'wordpress' folder to 777. If you don't know how to do this, check out the FTP tutorials on our tutorials page. In this example, we'll point to 'http://www.johnsmith.com/wordpress/wp-admin/install-config.php'. You should be at this screen now:

Click the 'let's go' link to continue. You're going to put the information from the database you created in step #1 into these fields. In this example, we'll fill the fields as follows:

    • Database Name: 'johnsmit_wordpress'
    • User Name: 'johnsmit_wordpress'
    • Password: 'mypassword'
    • Database Host: 'localhost' - Stays the same.
    • Table Prefix: 'wp_' - Stays the same.

Your screen should look like this:

Click the 'Submit' button to continue. This will write the values to a config file that the script will use to access your database. Your screen should look like this:

  4. Click the 'run the install!' link to go to the install wizard. You should be on this page now:

Click the 'let's go' link to start the installation. The script will now check for files that are needed to run WordPress on your web hosting account. If it doesn't find the files, it will create them. Your screen should look like this:

Click on the 'Step 2' link to go on to step 2. This page will create tables in your database to store your information. It will then ask you for the URL to your blog. The value in the field should be correct so you don't need to change this. Your screen should look like this:

Click on the 'Step 3' button to continue.
  5. You should now see that your WordPress setup was successful. You will also see that it created an admin account for you to use to manage your blog with. Make sure you take note of your password. This password is randomly generated and you need it to login to your account. Your screen should look like this:

Click on the 'Log in' link to go to the login page. Your screen should look like this:

Use the login and password that were created to login to your blog and start managing it how you see fit. The WordPress web hosting tutorial is now complete.

For more information on how to use WordPress once it's installed, check out the WordPress Documentation.
